ENGINE NOISE CAN CAUSE HEARING DAMAGE. WEAR EAR PROTECTION WHEN WORKING CONTINUOUSLY ON OR NEAR THE MACHINE WITH THE ENGINE RUNNING.

Normal Starting Of The Engine

1. Set the battery disconnect switch at "On".

2. Check that the travel control is at "N", and the main cutter and auxiliary cutter controls are at "Off".


NOTICE

ON MACHINES 504139 AND SUBSEQUENT, THE ENGINE WILL NOT START UNLESS THE TRAVEL CONTROL IS AT "N"


3. Insert the key into the ignition switch and turn it to the "On" position. Check the voltmeter for a reading of 12 volts. If the voltage is low it is an indication of a bad battery or batteries.

STARTING THE ENGINE BEFORE PERSONNEL ARE CLEAR OF THE MACHINE CAN CAUSE PERSONAL INJURY. SOUND THE HORN FOR SEVERAL SECONDS BEFORE STARTING.

4. Set the throttle lever one-half of the way toward "High".
5. Move the start switch forward. If the engine fails to start within 30 seconds, release the start switch and wait 2 minutes to allow the starter motor to cool before repeating the starting procedure.


NOTICE

DO NOT ENGAGE THE STARTER WHILE THE FLYWHEEL IS MOVING OR THE STARTER AND THE FLYWHEEL MAY BE DAMAGED.

IF THE ENGINE WILL NOT TURN OVER ON MACHINES 504139 AND SUBSEQUENT, CHECK THE WHEEL DRIVE PUMP NEUTRAL START SWITCH FOR PROPER OPERATION (SEE THE SUNDSTRAND SERVICE MANUAL FOR PROCEDURES).


6. Check the engine oil pressure gauge to be sure there is an indication of oil pressure. If not, shut the engine down immediately.
7. Check the voltmeter for a reading of about 14 volts, the alternator regulated output voltage. If the reading is less, determine and correct the cause before going further. The voltmeter should remain at about 14 volts anytime the engine is running.
8. Set the throttle lever to "Low".
9. Run the engine at low idle for 3 to 5 minutes. Check all gauges during the warm-up period.

Starting The Engine With Starting Fluid

STARTING FLUID IS HIGHLY FLAMMABLE AND COULD IGNITE AND CAUSE SERIOUS BURNS. USE STARTING FLUID SPARINGLY. DO NOT SMOKE WHEN USING STARTING FLUID.

------WARNING!--------

When starting fluid is required to start the engine, two persons must be available; one person to perform the starting procedure and one person to spray the starting fluid into the engine air cleaner inlet. Before starting the engine, spray starting fluid into the air cleaner inlet for 3 seconds. Follow the normal starting procedure and WHILE CRANKING THE ENGINE spray starting fluid into the air cleaner inlet for another 3 seconds. Additional injections of starting fluid may be required to start and/or achieve low idle speed. If the engine does not start within 30 seconds, let the starter cool for 2 minutes, then repeat the procedure. Stop spraying starting fluid into the inlet as soon as the engine starts and runs smoothly.

Starting The Engine After Running Out Of Fuel

The problem in restarting the engine after it has run out of fuel is that the fuel is pumped from the fuel filter before the fuel supply becomes insufficient to sustain engine firing. Consequently, the fuel filter must be refilled with fuel and the fuel lines rid of air before the system can provide adequate fuel for the injectors.

DIESEL FUEL IS FLAMMABLE. A FIRE OR EXPLOSION CAN RESULT IN SERIOUS BURNS OR PERSONAL INJURY FROM FLYING PARTICLES. NEVER SMOKE OR HAVE AN OPEN FLAME WHEN REFUELING OR REMOVING AIR FROM THE FUEL SYSTEM.

------WARNING!--------
1. Fill the tank with the recommended grade of fuel oil.

2. Loosen, in turn, each of the fuel line nuts at the cylinder head end.
3. Crank the engine with the starting motor until air-free fuel flows from each of the injection lines.


NOTICE

DO NOT CRANK THE ENGINE FOR MORE THAN 30 SECONDS. ALLOW 2 MINUTES FOR THE STARTER TO COOL BEFORE CRANKING AGAIN.


4. Tighten each of the fuel line nuts to a torque of 30+5 lb. ft. (41+7 Nm).
5. Start the engine and check for leaks.
