- 1. Have a first-aid kit handy. Use proper antiseptics on scratches, cuts, etc. immediately to avoid infection. LEARN WHERE TO GET PROPER MEDICAL SERVICE IF IT IS NEEDED.
- 2. Have a fire extinguisher handy, preferably mounted on the operator's platform.
- 3. Check to see that all personnel are clear of the machine before moving the machine. Sound the horn for several seconds to warn unobserved personnel and allow them time to clear the machine.
- 4. Never operate the machine under load until it is thoroughly warmed up - especially important with hydraulically operated equipment. Erratic machine response may occur when the hydraulic oil is cold.
- 5. Lower the cutter SLOWLY when starting a cut, or the machine may ride up on the cutter and travel backwards some distance.
- 6. DO NOT LET ANYONE STAND BEHIND THE MACHINE WHILE IT IS IN OPERATION. If the cutter hits a solid obstruction, the machine may jump backwards.
- 7. STOP THE MACHINE and check the grade some distance behind the machine. DO NOT CHECK THE GRADE BETWEEN THE CUTTER AND THE REAR TRACK.
- 8. Work slowly and carefully until you are accustomed to the machine, so that you will not get yourself into a situation you are not yet prepared to handle.
- 9. NEVER ALLOW A TRUCK TO HIT THE CONVEYOR. If a truck backs directly into the rear of the upper conveyor it can cause the conveyor structure or support members to fail immediately if the truck applies enough force. However, a seemingly minor contact by a truck can cause enough stress to start hairline cracks in the conveyor structure, support members and welds that will lead to a later failure.
- 10. Do not let anyone ride anywhere on the machine, not even for short distances. They could fall under the cutter or tracks or onto the conveyor.
- 11. Keep all personnel clear of the cutter, conveyors and tracks when the engine is running.
- 12. When operating the optional remote conveyor swing control, stand at the side of the machine, not behind it. Keep your feet and clothing clear of the rear track.
- 13. If you must leave the machine unattended, lower the mainframe until the cutter is on the ground and shut the engine down. Be sure the travel control is at neutral and the parking brake on.
- 14. ALWAYS TAPE OR OTHERWISE COVER THE EXHAUST STACK WHENEVER TRANSPORTING THE MACHINE. Air flowing into and through the exhaust system can turn the turbocharger backwards, damaging the turbocharger.
- 15. ALWAYS USE THE UPPER CONVEYOR SHIPPING SUPPORTS WHENEVER TRANSPORTING THE MACHINE. The high speed of operation and the heavy demand for the services of these machines lead to frequent transporting of the machines over highways and roads of varying quality. The normal bumping and rolling of the trailer causes high variable loads on the upper conveyor support, especially when travelling on rough roads. These high variable loads applied continuously over long transit times can cause fatigue cracks in the support welds and members that will cause structural failure at a later time.
- 16. Never show off, grandstand or engage in horseplay on the job.
- 17. Never use alcoholic beverages or illicit drugs on the job. Also, be careful of medicine, tranquilizers and other drugs that can cause sleepiness. The increased reaction time caused by any of these could cost your life.
- 18. Devote your full attention to the job. Even a slight distraction can be dangerous while operating a machine.
- 19. Let only authorized and responsible persons operate the machine. No inexperienced person should ever be allowed to operate the machine without proper training first.
- 20. Never try to service a moving machine. You could fall under the machine.
- 21. Never try to mount a moving machine. You could fall under the machine.
- 22. Never operate an unsafe machine. You or your friends and associates could be seriously injured.
