Checking Engine Coolant Line Connections And Hoses

------ WARNING! ------

SHUT THE ENGINE DOWN AND ALLOW IT TO COOL BEFORE CHECKING THE LINE CONNECTIONS AND HOSES. THE COOLING SYSTEM WATER AND COMPONENTS CAN BE HOT ENOUGH TO CAUSE BURNS.

------WARNING!--------

Check all coolant line connections and tighten any that are loose. Check for cracked, soft or otherwise deteriorated hoses. Replace any bad ones.

Checking Drive Belts For The Fan, Alternator And Water Pump

------ WARNING! ------

SHUT THE ENGINE DOWN BEFORE WORKING IN THE ENGINE COMPARTMENT. STAY CLEAR OF HOT EXHAUST DUCTING.

------WARNING!--------

Check all the drive belts for signs of wear or fraying and replace any belts that show such signs. Also check and adjust the belt tension.

Replace all belts in a set when one is worn. Single belts of similar size should not be used as a substitute for a matched set; premature belt wear can result because of belt length variation. All belts in a matched set are within .032 inch of their specified center distances.

New standard V-belts will stretch after the first few hours of operation. Run the engine for 15 seconds to seat the belts then retighten them. Retighten the fan drive, water pump drive, battery-charging alternator and other accessory drive belts after 1/2 hour and again after 8 hours of operation. Thereafter, check the tension of the drive belts every 200 hours and adjust, if necessary. Too tight a belt is destructive to the bearings of the driven part; a loose belt will slip.

NOTICE

NEVER PRY A BELT OVER A PULLEY.

To check the tension of the V-belts apply a force midway between the two pulleys and check the belt deflection. The correct force and deflection for each V-belt is given below. Check each belt of a set separately.

Fan - 13 pound force, 1/4 inch deflection.
Alternator - 5 pound force, 1/4 inch deflection.
Water Pump - 7 pound force, 5/16 inch deflection.

Checking And Adjusting The Pump Drive Gearbox Drive Belts

------ WARNING! ------

SHUT THE ENGINE DOWN AND REMOVE THE KEY FROM THE IGNITION SWITCH BEFORE WORKING ON THE GEARBOX BELTS. SERIOUS INJURIES CAN RESULT FROM INADVERTENT STARTING OF THE ENGINE.

------WARNING!--------
1. Remove the belt guard.
2. Check the drive belts for breaks, cracks, burned spots, separation from the tie band or excessive wear. Check the tie bands for fraying, holes, blisters or wear. If the condition of any belt band is questionable, replace all belt bands.
3. Check each belt band for proper tension by placing a rigid bar across the width of the belt band halfway between the engine sheave and the gearbox sheave, then depressing the band evenly. A 33 pound force should produce a deflection of 3/4 inch.
4. If the tension is not correct, loosen the support clamping bolts and the jam nuts on the adjusting bolts, turn the adjusting bolts evenly until the tension is correct, then tighten the jam nuts and clamping bolts. Turning the bolts clockwise, viewed from the head end of the bolts, will increase the tension.
5. Install the belt guard.

Checking And Adjusting The Cutter Drive Belts

------ WARNING! ------

SHUT THE ENGINE DOWN, LOCK THE CUTTER CONTROL AT "OFF", AND REMOVE THE KEY FROM THE IGNITION SWITCH BEFORE WORKING ON THE CUTTER BELTS. SERIOUS INJURIES CAN RESULT FROM INADVERTENT STARTING OF THE CUTTER.

------WARNING!--------
1. If necessary, unbolt the right side averaging ski beams, remove the retaining bolt from the extension, swivel the extension out of the way, then open the cutter belt guard.
2. Check the cutter belts for breaks, cracks, burned spots, separation from the tie band, or excessive wear. Check the tie bands for fraying, holes or blisters. If the condition of any belt band is questionable, replace all the belt bands.
3. Check each belt band for proper tension by placing a rigid bar across the width of the belt band halfway between the power take-off sheave and the cutter sheave, then depressing the band evenly. A 55 pound force should produce a deflection of 7/8 inch.
4. If the tension is not correct, loosen the front nut on the adjusting bolt, turn the rear nut until the tension is correct, then hold the rear nut and tighten the front nut.
5. Close the drive belt guard and install the averaging ski and extension.

Changing The Hydraulic Oil Tank Breather Filter Element

The hydraulic oil tank breather filter element is a spin-on type element. To change the element:

1. Unscrew the filter element from the filter body.

2. Check the condition of the O-ring at the base of the filter body. Replace the O-ring, if necessary.
3. Coat the O-ring with clean hydraulic oil and screw the element onto the filter body until it contacts the O-ring.
4. Turn the element about 1/2 turn more.

Cleaning The Replenishing Tank Breather

1. Remove the breather.
2. Wash in clean non-flammable solvent.
3. Blow dry with air or allow to drain dry.
4. Reinstall.
