PR-1000 PAVEMENT PROFILER Starting Operation Caterpillar

Starting Operation
`
1.1. With Standard Elevation Control
2.1. With Optional Cross Slope Control

With Standard Elevation Control

------ WARNING! ------

TO PREVENT HEARING DAMAGE, WEAR EAR PROTECTION WHEN WORKING CONTINUOUSLY ON OR NEAR THE MACHINE WITH EITHER OR BOTH ENGINES RUNNING.

------WARNING!--------

1. Position the machine at the starting point, lower the mainframe evenly until the cutter bits are just above grade and the mainframe is level, then set the emergency and park brake control at "On" and the overdrive controls at "Off".
2. Check that the cutter clutch control is set at the disengaged position, then start the cutter engine (engine A). See page 4-4 for the starting procedure. Set the engine at low idle to allow it to warm up while the machine is being readied for operation.

3. Adjust the position of the crank mounting brackets in the collar and, at the same time, adjust the extension of the cranks to place the counterweight arms horizontal with the wands in the wand guides. On a grade sensing wheel assembly, the position of the rod holder on the bracket may also be adjusted. It is desirable to have the crank indicator on one of the inch marks on the crank, and enough travel space must be left to crank the sensor upward the same distance as the depth of cut to be made.
4. With engine B (3208) running, loosen the counterweight arm on the left sensor shaft, insert the blade of a screwdriver into the slot in the sensor shaft, and set the front elevation selector at "Auto". Turn the sensor shaft until there is no movement of the front elevation cylinder with the wand horizontal and in the wand guide, then tighten the counterweight arm on the sensor shaft.
5. Set the right rear elevation selectors at "Auto" and "Sensor" then adjust the right sensor null as was done in step 4 for the left sensor.
6. Adjust the steering indicator position and set the elevation scales to "0" or other selected reading.

------ WARNING! ------

BEFORE ENGAGING THE CUTTER, BE SURE THE CUTTER AREA IS CLEAR OF OBSTRUCTIONS AND PERSONNEL. ALSO BE SURE THE CUTTER BITS ARE CLEAR OF THE GRADE OR THE MACHINE MAY LUNGE BACKWARD WHEN THE CUTTER IS ENGAGED.

------WARNING!--------
7. Set the cutter engine (engine A) at low idle if possible, but not to exceed 1200 RPM in any case, then move the clutch control to "In".
8. Adjust the position of the upper conveyor as necessary.
9. Turn the appropriate lights on.
10. Move the conveyor and spray bar controls to "On".
11. Move the emergency and park brake control to "Off", then move the travel control forward to provide a slow travel speed.

------ WARNING! ------

WHENEVER STARTING A CUT, LOWER THE CUTTER SLOWLY! IF THE CUTTER IS LOWERED TOO FAST, THE MACHINE WILL RIDE UP ONTO THE CUTTER AND LUNGE BACKWARDS SOME DISTANCE. THE MACHINE MAY ALSO LUNGE BACKWARD A SHORT DISTANCE IF THE CUTTER HITS SOME STEEL IN THE CONCRETE WHILE CUTTING. NEVER LET ANYONE STAND NEAR THE BACK OF THE MACHINE WHILE IT IS IN OPERATION!!

------WARNING!--------
12. As the machine starts forward, slowly crank the left elevation sensor up until the desired depth of cut is reached. The right elevation sensor will have to be cranked down as the right track moves down onto the cut grade. The depth of cut will be indicated on the front leg elevation scale.

NOTE: THE MAXIMUM DEPTH OF CUT IS 10 INCHES.

13. After the machine has travelled forward a sufficient distance, check the grade being cut and make any necessary adjustments.

------ WARNING! ------

CHECK THE GRADE AT A POINT BEHIND THE MACHINE, NOT BETWEEN THE CUTTER AND THE REAR TRACK. YOUR HAND OR FOOT COULD GET CAUGHT UNDER THE TRACK.

------WARNING!--------
14. If it is necessary to correct the grade already cut:
a. Stop the machine.
b. Move the front and right rear elevation selectors to "Manual".
c. Raise the mainframe with the elevation controls.
d. Back to the starting point and start the operation again.

With Optional Cross Slope Control

------ WARNING! ------

TO PREVENT HEARING DAMAGE, WEAR EAR PROTECTION WHEN WORKING CONTINUOUSLY ON OR NEAR THE MACHINE WITH EITHER OR BOTH ENGINES RUNNING.

------WARNING!--------

1. Position the machine at the starting point, lower the mainframe evenly until the cutter bits are just above grade and the mainframe is level, then set the emergency and park brake control at "On" and the overdrive controls at "Off".

3. Adjust the position of the left side crank mounting bracket in the collar and, at the same time, adjust the extension of the crank to place the counterweight arm horizontal with the wand in the wand guide. On the grade sensing wheel assembly, the position of the rod holder on the bracket may also be adjusted. It is desirable to have the crank indicator on one of the inch marks on the crank, and enough travel space must be left to crank the sensor upward the same distance as the depth of cut to be made.

Turn the sensor shaft until there is no movement of the front elevation cylinder with the wand horizontal and in the wand guide, then tighten the counterweight arm on the sensor shaft.
5. Set the slope indicator to the desired cross slope.
6. Set the right rear elevation selectors at "Auto" and "Cross Slope".

------WARNING!--------
13. As the machine starts forward, slowly crank the elevation sensor up until the desired depth of cut is reached. The depth of cut will gradually increase and will stabilize after the rear tracks are travelling on cut grade. The depth of cut will be indicated on the front leg elevation scale.

NOTE: THE MAXIMUM DEPTH OF CUT IS 10 INCHES.

14. After the machine has travelled forward a sufficient distance, check the grade being cut and make any necessary adjustments.
