1.1. Lubricating The Cutter And Cooling Fan Slip Joint Drive Shafts

NOTES: A. Maintain level between "Full" and "Add" marks on dipstick.

Refill quantities: 3208 - 20 U.S. quarts, 3412 - 16 U.S. Gallons, optional high pressure water pump - .75 U.S. pint.

B. Check coolant level. Add coolant to keep level within 2 inches of filler neck.

C. Clean radiators and oil cooler daily. Straighten any bent cooling fins.

D. Change as required by indicator.

E. Check for Water. Drain any water found.

F. Fill to check plug level.

G. Lubricate slowly until excess is observed.

H. Apply two full strokes on handle of grease gun.

J. Clean primary filter element if fuel pressure gauge registers in "Out" range. If pressure is still in "Out" range, change final filter elements.

K. Change filter elements when system bypass gauge on console indicates 60 PSI or above with hydraulic system temperature above 140°F and 3208 engine at high idle.

L. Change track pump suction filter element when ground drive becomes slow or sluggish or every 250 hours, whichever occurs first.

M. Check filter condition with 3208 engine at high idle and hydraulic system temperature at or above 140°F. Actuate a steering or elevation control valve and observe the auxiliary pressure gauge for a drop in pressure. If the filter indicator is red, change the auxiliary filter element.

NOTICE

HYDRAULIC SYSTEMS WILL NOT OPERATE WITH DIRTY HYDRAULIC OIL FILTERS. A SUPPLY OF FILTER ELEMENTS AT JOB LOAVSION IS MANDATORY. RE-ORDER ELEMENTS WHEN SUPPLY RUNS LOW.

N. See special instructions on inside of belt drive cover or on pages 5-39 and 5-40.

O. Check water, add as needed.

Lubricating The Cutter And Cooling Fan Slip Joint Drive Shafts

Each of the slip joint drive shafts has two universal joints (U-joints) and a sliding spline section. Each U-joint has four bearings. All four bearings and the sliding spline section must be properly lubricated if trouble is to be avoided.

------ WARNING! ------

DISENGAGE THE CUTTER CLUTCH, LOCK THE CLUTCH CONTROL AT "OUT" AND SHUT THE CUTTER ENGINE (ENGINE A) DOWN BEFORE LUBRIAVSING THE CUTTER DRIVE SHAFT. SERIOUS INJURIES CAN RESULT FROM INADVERTENT STARTING OF THE CUTTER.

SHUT THE PRIMARY ENGINE (ENGINE B) DOWN AND SET THE MAIN BATTERY DISCONNECT SWITCH AT "OFF" BEFORE LUBRIAVSING THE FAN DRIVE SHAFT. SERIOUS INJURES CAN RESULT FROM INADVERTENT STARTING OF THE FAN.

------WARNING!--------

To ensure proper lubrication of all four bearing assemblies in the universal joints, it is essential that lubricant be added until it appears at all journal cross bearing seals. This assures removal of dirt particles and other contaminants that may find their way into the bearings and indicates that the bearings are fully lubricated.

Do not assume that bearing cavities have been filled with new lubricant unless flow is noticed around all four bearing seals!

The journal cross seals are designed to relieve. However, if not all the seals "pop" when being lubed, move the drive shaft laterally in all four directions and pull or push on the drive shaft in the direction opposite to the journal cross seal not relieving, while lube gun pressure is being applied to the lubrication fitting. An increase in line pressure may also be necessary.

To ensure proper lubrication of the sliding spline section, apply grease gun pressure to the lubrication fitting until lubrication appears at the pressure relief hole in the welch plug at the sleeve end of the spline.

Then cover the pressure relief hole with a finger and continue to apply grease until it appears at the sleeve yoke seal.
