Personnel Required

A smooth, efficient paving operation using a Windrow Elevator will require the service of a "dump man". The dump man controls the amount of asphalt dumped in front of the Elevator by signaling to the truck driver when to dump and when to stop dumping. When the dump man sees that too much material is building up in the hopper, he has the truck driver skip some distance and then start the windrow again.

It is not necessary that an experienced dump man be obtained. Any competent person will know how much material to leave in the windrow after two or three truckloads have been dumped. With very little practice the person can become quite proficient as a dump man.

Charging The Paver Hopper

1. Remove the locking bolts from the rear wheel casters, connect the Elevator to the asphalt paver and position them at the starting point.
2. Raise the tow bar and bolt it in place.
3. Start the Elevator engine and allow it to warm up.

4. Set the hydraulic valve handle at "Raise" or "Lower", as necessary, then engage the electric motor. When the wings, extensions and bottom blade are all just contacting grade, stop the electric motor.

5. Turn the cranks down until the shafts just contact the mainframe. Tighten the jam nuts.

------ WARNING! ------

DIESEL FUEL CAN CAUSE TIRES, HYDRAULIC HOSES, ELECTRIC WIRE INSULATION AND OTHER PLASTIC OR RUBBER MATERIALS TO DETERIORATE RAPIDLY AND CAUSE A PERSONAL INJURY AT A LATER DATE. BE CAREFUL WHERE YOU SPRAY THE FUEL.

------WARNING!--------
6. Spray diesel fuel on all Elevator surfaces that will be in contact with the asphalt. Be sure the conveyor chains, slats and bottom liner are well coated.
7. Lay a windrow ahead of the elevator with enough asphalt to fill the paver hopper.
8. Engage the clutch of the Elevator and adjust the engine speed.

NOTICE

SET THE ENGINE SPEED AS SLOW AS POSSIBLE WHEN ENGAGING THE CLUTCH.

9. With the paver screed raised, move the paver forward until the hopper has been filled by the Elevator.
10. Back the paver and Elevator to the starting point.

Paving

After the paver hopper has been charged, and the paver and Elevator positioned at the starting point as described above:

1. Make the necessary adjustments to the paver.
2. Back a truck as close as possible to the Elevator and lay a windrow of asphalt out in front of the Elevator.
3. Adjust the Elevator engine speed and then start the paving operation.

The remainder of the paving operation is the same as operation without the Windrow Elevator, except that the dump man must control the amount of asphalt being dumped by the trucks.

Either bottom dump or end dump trucks can be used with the Windrow Elevator, but end dump trucks must be equipped with a windrow sizer (an adjustable gate to control the windrow size).

Cleanup

NOTICE

DIESEL FUEL CAN CAUSE TIRES, HYDRAULIC HOSES, ELECTRIC WIRE INSULATION AND OTHER PLASTIC OR RUBBER MATERIALS TO DETERIORATE RAPIDLY AND CAUSE A PERSONAL INJURY AT A LATER DATE. BE CAREFUL WHERE YOU SPRAY THE FUEL.

After the paving operation is completed, all asphalt should be cleaned from the Elevator before the asphalt can set up. When using diesel fuel to clean the machine, use care to keep the spray off electric wires, hydraulic hoses and tires. Spray the elevator drive chains with diesel fuel to lubricate them.

Towing The Windrow Elevator

------ WARNING! ------

THE WINDROW ELEVATOR IS NOT STABLE WHEN TOWED AT HIGH SPEEDS AND COULD CAUSE PERSONAL INJURY. THE ELEVATOR SHOULD BE LOADED ABOARD A TRAILER ANYTIME IT MUST BE TAKEN ON STREETS OR HIGHWAYS OPEN TO THE PUBLIC. THE TOWING CAPABILITY IS INTENDED FOR ON-SITE MOVEMENT ONLY.

------WARNING!--------
1. Position the Windrow Elevator on a level area and block the wheels.

2. Install the locking bolts in the rear wheel casters.

3. Fold the wing extensions in and tighten the bolts so the extensions cannot swing.

4. Lower the tow bar and install the bolts.
5. Use the hydraulic system controls to raise the conveyor as necessary to match the hitch of the towing vehicle, and hitch the Elevator to the towing vehicle.

6. Place the moldboard elevation selector lever at "Lower" and activate the hydraulic pump. This will raise the front wheels off the ground.

NOTICE

TOW THE WINDROW ELEVATOR ONLY AT SPEEDS OF 10 MILES (16.1 Km) PER HOUR OR LESS.

7. Tow the vehicle to the desired location and block the rear wheels. Lower the front wheels to the ground by using the hydraulic pump with the moldboard elevation selector lever at "Raise".
8. Unhitch the Windrow Elevator from the towing vehicle.
