PROBLEM
The existing rear 356-4199 Axle Pinion may fail due to a heat treat issue on certain 980L, 980M, and 982M Wheel Loaders. If the existing pinion fails, it can cause secondary damage to the bevel gear and bearings in the immediate area. |

ACTION REQUIRED
The rear axle pinion shaft will need to be inspected. There are markings on the end of the pinion shaft that will include the lot number. Refer to Image1. The lot number will be a two-digit number starting with a 4 or a 5. If the lot is "51" or "52" the pinion shaft will need to be replaced with a new 356-4199. Rear Axle Pinion Shaft Inspection: 1. Drain approximately 5 Gal/20 L of oil from the center of the rear axle housing. 2. Remove the rear drive joint. Refer to Image1. 3. Remove the axle yoke by sliding it off the pinion shaft. 4. Inspect the end of the pinion shaft. - If the pinion shaft does NOT have a lot number of "51" or "52" no action is needed, lubricate the yoke hub, and slide it back into the splines. Install the drive joint with new 234-6681 Bolts and tighten to a specified torque of 150 +/- 15 N.m using an "X" pattern. Refill the axle to the proper oil level. - If the lot number "51" or "52" is identified on the end of the Pinion shaft, the pinion shaft will need to be replaced. Take a picture of the end of the pinion shaft and up-load it into SIMS. Refer to Image2. Complete the Rear Axle Pinion Shaft Replacement. Rear Axle Pinion Shaft Replacement: Please follow the Disassembly and Assembly manuals to remove existing parts and for installation of new parts. 980L Machines: Refer to M0075593, Disassembly and Assembly, Axle/Differential Remove/Install procedures, for additional information. 980M/982M Machines: Refer to UENR3097, Disassembly and Assembly, Axle/Differential Remove/Install procedures, for additional information. Once the axle is removed and the differential carrier is removed, only the pinion shaft and pinion bearings need to be replaced. The bevel gear does not need to be disassembled on a before failure repair. Refer to UENR3097, Disassembly and Assembly, "Differential and Bevel Gear ? Assemble" to check the gear backlash and gear tooth contact pattern and adjust as needed. |
