SUBJECT: 8F-3469 O-Ring Seal Failures may be caused by a Transmission Clutch Shaft that is too short

PROBLEM:

There have been failure reports on the 8F-3469 O-Ring Seal used under the rotating seal carrier that is bolted to the end of the transmission clutch shaft. In several cases when the O-ring failures occurred on the 5th/6th clutch shaft, the root cause of the failure was determined to be a 6Y-1878 Shaft Assembly that was machined too short. The o-ring seals and the shaft assembly are part of the 6Y-2305 Clutch Gp.

SOLUTION:

The problem with the 6Y-1878 Shaft Assembly has been corrected by the suppler. If there is an 8F-3469 O-Ring Seal failure on the 5th/6th clutch shaft, the 6Y-1878 Shaft Assembly should be checked for the correct dimensions. Measure the shoulder from the end of the shaft to the spline (A). The shoulder is on the end of the shaft where the seal carrier bolts. The dimension should be 20.50 ± 0.05 MM (0.807 ± 0.002 inch). See the illustration. If the dimension is not correct, replace the shaft assembly.

(A) 20.50 ± 0.05 MM (0.807 ± 0.002 inch)
