SUBJECT: Bypass Schedule May Be Affected when Machine Security System (MSS) Automatically Adjusts to North American Daylight Savings Time

PROBLEM:

The Machine Security System (MSS) automatically adjusts to North American Daylight Savings Time (DST) regardless of geographic location. This directly affects the MSS Bypass Scheduler in countries (and some regions of North America) that do not observe North American Daylight Savings Time.

MSS automatically adjusts its internal clock to DST on the first Sunday in April (2AM) and returns to Standard Time on the last Sunday in October (2AM). If the machine is outside of its bypass schedule, an operator will not be able to start the machine with a non-electronic key or with an electronic key that is not authorized.

This problem affects the current version of MSS software (220-6355.fls).

SOLUTION:

Customer Options

For locations that do not observe North American DST, three options are listed below.

Note: The date of the time change in some countries may precede or follow the North American Standard by as much as one week.

1. Use authorized electronic keys only. An authorized electronic key will start the machine regardless of bypass schedule.

2. Widen the bypass schedule by one hour (two hours in Southern Hemisphere) so that the actual work period will always fall within the bypass window, regardless of the time change.

3. Twice a year, use Cat ET (or Customer ET) to reset the time on the ECM.

System Solution

To resolve the issue of worldwide timezones, both MSS and Cat ET need to be updated. The current release of MSS software is 220-6355.fls. The next release of MSS is scheduled for Spring 2003. The next release of Cat ET is scheduled for April 2003.
