SUBJECT:

Water Pump Leak on 797 Trucks

PROBLEM:

Several of the 221-5352 Water Pumps and the 221-5353 Water Pumps have failed. The Vital Information Management System (VIMS) gave a level one front engine oil filter plugged warning for up to one hour before the coolant started pouring out of the weep hole on the pump. Large amounts of coolant entered the crankcase.

SOLUTION:

The above problem continues to be investigated. In the interim, AVSpare suggests the following:

  1. Treat a level one front engine oil filter plugged warning as a level 3 warning.
  2. Stop the machine and inspect both water pumps for coolant coming from the weep hole.
  3. Check the oil level in order to see if the crankcase shows over full.
  4. Check the oil for signs of coolant in the oil that may be plugging the filter.

In the event that the water pump(s) have allowed water to enter the crankcase it will be necessary to clean the crankcase after the repair, and prior to the machine being put back in service. The level of cleaning will depend on the quantity of coolant that was allowed to enter the crankcase and how long the engine ran while contaminated. To help determine the level of cleaning required, refer to Service Magazine, SEPD0110, "Procedure for Cleaning an Engine Lubrication System when Contaminated with Engine Coolant Containing Antifreeze".
