SUBJECT: 5K-8591 Bearing Failures May be Due to a Defective Shaft

PROBLEM:

The 6Y-3148 Shaft (1) used in the torque converter of the listed models may have a manufacturing defect. The splines for the output gear may have been cut tool long, removing part of the bearing journal surface which centers the 6V-4351 Plate (2) during assembly. If the 6V-4351 Plate is not centered, it may rub on the cage of the 5K-8591 bearing (3), resulting in a failure of the bearing.

SOLUTION: If the 5K-8591 Bearing fails on one of the listed machines, replace the 6Y-3148 Shaft as part of the repair. All 6Y-3148 Shafts that are available through the parts system have been manufactured correctly.
