SUBJECT: DRUM DRIVE PLANETARY IN LARGE ASPHALT COMPACTORS

PROBLEM:

Some of the drum drive planetaries in the large double drums asphalt compactors are experiencing premature failures. Failure reports include gear failures, and loosening of the nut retaining the bearing preload.

SOLUTION:

No interim solution is available at this time. In order to better determine the root cause of the failures, it is important to get failed drum drive planetary returned to the factory intact. In the event of a diagnosed drum drive planetary failure, take a SOS sample, remove the rear cover and visually inspect the condition of the inside of the planetary. If evidence of damage is present, replace the cover and contact Larry Andersen at AVSpare Global Paving before disassembling the gearbox.
