Component Code 1206

SUBJECT: Idler Gear Hub Failures on 3054C, 3054E, and 3056E Engines

PROBLEM:

Excessive wear on the idler gear hub and on the idler gear bushing has been reported.

SOLUTION:

An interim containment for this problem is available. If the bushing in the 232-3668 or the 216-8633 Idler Gear Assembly (1) and the 067-6897 Idler Gear Hub (2) exhibit excessive wear , replace the worn parts with the following newly introduced parts:

  • 1 of the 251-4336 Idler Gear Assembly
  • 1 of the 254-6029 Idler Gear Hub
  • 1 of the 255-1209 Retaining Plate
  • 3 of the 6I-0650 Bolts

The new 251-4336 Idler Gear Assembly contains a new solid brush and the 254-6029 hub material has also changed. A new retaining plate that has longer screws is also included.

Early identification of wear of the idler hub and bushing is possible through Scheduled Oil Sampling (S× O× S). If the level of copper (Cu) exceeds 100 ppm in any 250-hour period, further investigation should be carried out. Other symptoms of the wear problem may include hard starting and white smoke.
