Component Code: 1405

SUBJECT: 938GII/IT38GII Alternator Wiring Issue

PROBLEM:

Some machines equipped with the standard (9W-3043) 50 Amp alternator may experience charging system problems. The 9W-3043 alternator requires excitation voltage on the (D+) input to insure that it will turn on properly.

SOLUTION:

Cat engineering is aware of the problem. An engine harness design change is being investigated. In the meantime, if the alternator is not charging properly, provide a +24V input to the alternator D+ terminal as shown in the schematic below. Note that a resistor and diode are also required. Make sure that the diode polarity is followed as shown in the schematic. Secure the wiring to the existing engine harness with ty wraps to avoid rubbing and pinching of the harness.
