SUBJECT: TRACK DRIVE PLANETARY FAILURES ON THE ASPHALT PAVERS

PROBLEM:

Planetary gear thrust washers in the third (final) planet stage can fail under load. Pieces of these thrust washers can enter the mesh causing gear tooth failure. The failure can quickly expand resulting in major damage.

Planetary Part Numbers

  • 190-6344
  • 190-6345
  • 219-1962

SOLUTION:

Major damage can be avoided by early detection. Removing and examining the oil plug can detect a failed thrust washer. The plug has a magnet for trapping ferrous particles. Pieces of a failed thrust washer collect on the magnet in large flakes.

The magnetic plug also traps break-in wear particles. They are fine, powdery particles and are not indicative of a pending planetary failure.

If large flakes are found on the plug, do not disassemble the planetary. Call AVSpare Global Paving Minneapolis for instructions on how to proceed.
