SUBJECT: PAINT ON CYLINDER RODS CAN CAUSE SEAL FAILURES ON CERTAIN BACKHOE LOADERS, INTEGRATED TOOLCARRIERS, AND WHEEL LOADERS

PROBLEM:

The hydraulic cylinders on certain Backhoe Loaders, Integrated Toolcarriers, and Wheel Loaders may have paint on the part of the cylinder rods that will go into the cylinders when the rods retract. The paint on the cylinder rods may cause damage to the seals in the cylinder head. The paint on the cylinder rods was due to standard paint masking procedures not being consistently followed.

SOLUTION:

Inspect all of the cylinder rods on all of the hydraulic cylinders on machines in the listed serial number ranges for this problem before the machines are delivered to a customer, or on the next visit to the machine. If a cylinder rod is found to have paint on the part of the cylinder rod that will go into the cylinder when the rod retracts, the paint must be removed in order to prevent a future low hour seal failure.
