SUBJECT:
RECALL OF CENTER TREAD IDLER GROUPS BACK TO THE FACTORY, TO CORRECT DEFICIENT PARTS AND INCORRECT ASSEMBLY PROCEDURES ON CERTAIN TRACK-TYPE TRACTORS.
PROBLEM:
A new Center Tread Idler group was recently introduced as a part of the new (production) SystemOne undercarriage. Shortly after first production of these new idler groups, non-conforming parts and incorrect assembly procedures were discovered. These idler groups could have one or more of the following problems:
(1) Idler shafts that were improperly heat treated and machined
(2) Duo-cone seals that were improperly installed
(3) A paint protection O-ring that can work into the idler sealing cavity, causing an oil leak
These problems will cause premature idler failures.
SOLUTION:
The Center Tread Idler groups are currently available as part of a SystemOne undercarriage attachment on tractors from the factory. They are also available through parts, as a retrofit option for tractors receiving SystemOne undercarriage. Only the Center Tread Idler groups are affected by this T.I.B. All idlers assembled on machines from the factory have been reworked. A small number of D6R tractors left the factory with the non-conforming idlers installed. All idler groups and piece part shafts in parts inventory have been sorted and reworked. However, a limited number of these non-conforming Center Tread Idler groups were sold through the parts system. Only two part numbers used on (4) tractor models are affected, as shown below.

Non-conforming Center Tread Idler groups on tractors and from parts must be identified and replaced to avoid field failures and unscheduled downtime. Replacement idler groups should be ordered through the Parts System, under the same part number. Dealers must not rework these non-conforming idler groups.
D6H/R Center Tread Idler groups (227-8715): Two suppliers make the D6R/H Center Tread Idler group (227-8715). The non-conformance problems of these idler groups are related to only one of the two suppliers. The non-conforming idlers can be identified by features on the side of the cast idler shell. The non-conforming D6H/R idler groups DO NOT have cast "fins" on the web face of the idler at the hub base. These idlers must be replaced. The D6H/R idler groups that are correctly built have cast "fins" on the web face at the hub base. These cast "fins" are only on one side of the idler. So, both sides of any idler must be inspected for proper determination of conforming vs. non-conforming idlers. These idlers with cast "fins" are O.K. to use. Both idler types are shown below.

(No Cast Fins) (Cast Fins on One Side)
A very limited number of (only) D6R Tractors were factory built and shipped with the non-conforming idlers. The serial numbers of these affected tractors are listed below.

The Center Tread Idler groups on these tractors must be replaced. A limited number of the non-conforming idler groups were also sold through the parts system. This includes any idler groups (227-8715, without cast "fins") that were ordered from January 1, 2004 through February 1, 2005. These (parts) idler groups installed on tractors or still in dealer or customer inventory, must also be identified and replaced.
D6N/M Center Tread Idler groups (227-8825): Unlike the D6H/R, all D6N and D6M Center Tread Idler groups (227-8825) are potentially non-conforming. No D6N tractors were factory built with non-conforming idler groups (227-8825). However, a limited number of the non-conforming idler groups were sold through the parts system. This includes any idler groups ordered from January 1, 2004 through February 1, 2005. These (parts) idler groups installed on tractors or still in dealer or customer inventory, must also be identified and replaced.
Replacement and return of the non-conforming Center Tread Idler groups : All identified non-conforming Center Tread Idler groups (227-8715 & 227-8825) should be replaced with new idler groups, ordered through parts. As previously stated, all idler groups in AVSpare?s inventory have been sorted and reworked. The reworked idlers have a new identification marking. This marking is stamped on the oil hole end of the shaft, as shown below.
The non-conforming idler groups should then be returned back to AVSpare. This includes new or used idler groups removed from machines, and new idler groups from dealer or customer inventory. Idler groups to be returned must first be marked by painting a large "stripe" or "dot" on both sides of the idler side face. This large painted "stripe or "dot" can be any color other than yellow. It should be large enough for easy identification. Examples of this are shown below.

For idlers removed from tractors, the tractor model, serial number, and repair date must be recorded and E-mailed to AVSpare at the following address :
