SUBJECT: THE PUMP DRIVE SHAFT SEAL LEAKS ON THE SOIL COMPACTORS

PROBLEM:

The pump drive shaft seal on the axle propel pump may be leaking due to other components (hub, nylon flange, damper) and this will affect the service life of the seal.

SOLUTION:

The following procedure will assist in the proper installation of the 194-1983 shaft seal and determine if other components are affecting the seal?s service life.

  1. Remove the propel pumps. Refer to Disassembly and Assembly, "Piston Pumps (Axle and Drum Propel)-Remove".
  2. Replace 194-1983 shaft seal (1) on the axle propel pump. After installing the shaft seal, inspect the hub (2), nylon flange (3), and the vibration damper (4).
  3. Inspect hub (2) for any signs of wear. Replace the hub if there are signs of wear or damage.

4.Inspect (3) nylon flange inside the flywheel housing for any signs of wear. Replace the nylon flange if there are signs of wear or damage.

5.Check the crankshaft vibration damper (4) for the following: cracks, wear, and damage. Refer to Testing and Adjusting, RENR2416, "Vibration Damper-Check". Replace the damper if there are any signs of wear or damage.

6.Install the propel pumps. Refer to Disassembly and Assembly, "Piston Pumps (Axle and Drum Propel)-Install".
