Testing and Adjusting the Pressure of the Main Relief Valve
Introduction
This test is designed to determine if the main relief valve is adjusted to the correct pressure setting.

NOTICE |
---|
Care must be taken to ensure that fluids are contained during performance of inspection, maintenance, testing, adjusting, and repair of the product. Be prepared to collect the fluid with suitable containers before opening any compartment or disassembling any component containing fluids. Refer to Special Publication, NENG2500, "Dealer Service Tool Catalog" for tools and supplies suitable to collect and contain fluids on Cat products. Dispose of all fluids according to local regulations and mandates. |
Required Tools
Hydraulic test procedures may be performed using either one of the following test equipment:
- Digital Pressure Indicator
- Standard tooling

Test Procedure
The 198-4240 Digital Pressure Indicator was used in the following test.
Note: Perform the Relief Valve (Charge) - Test and Adjust before you conduct the Relief Valve (Main) - Test and Adjust.
Before you conduct the test procedure on the main relief valves, the following steps must be performed:
- Place the propel control lever in NEUTRAL position.
- Place the machine in position against a solid, stationary object such as a loading dock. The wheels may be blocked and the drum may be blocked instead of placing the machine against a stationary object.
- Make sure that the parking brake is applied.

- Remove brake line (1). Use Tool (D) to plug the brake line and cap the fitting for the brake line.
- Connect Tool (E) between the X1 and X2 ports on the drum propel pump.

- Connect two Tools (A2) to pressure test ports (6) and (10) .
- Loosen the adjusting locknut (11) on the pressure override relief valve. Turn adjuster (12) clockwise for one half of a turn. Tighten the locknut (11) .

- Release the parking brake.
- Move the switch for machine speed to the HIGH SPEED position.
- Start the machine and run the engine at high idle at 2310 ± 50 rpm. Check the hydraulic temperature with Tool (C) until the hydraulic oil temperature reaches 38°C (100°F).
- Move the propel control lever to the full FORWARD position. The pressure at pressure test port (10) should be 46450 ± 1000 kPa (6737 ± 145 psi) above charge pressure.
- If the relief valve pressure reading on the axle propel pump is not correct, the forward main relief valve (9) must be adjusted.
- If the forward relief valve setting is correct, move the propel control lever to the full REVERSE position. The pressure at pressure test port (2) should be 46450 ± 1000 kPa (6737 ± 145 psi).
- If the relief valve pressure reading on the axle propel pump is not correct, the reverse main relief valve (3) must be adjusted.
Adjusting Procedure
- If the forward relief valve pressure is not correct, the following steps must be done in order to adjust the main relief valves:
- Stop the engine.
- Remove the caps on the forward relief valves.
- Remove relief valve cartridge (13) from relief valve (9). Reinstall the caps on the relief valve, so the oil does not leak during the adjustment to the cartridges.
- Clamp the cartridge in a soft vise jaw. See the arrows in illustration 8. Loosen locking setscrew (14) with a 3 mm allen wrench.
- Use a 5 mm wrench to turn spindle (16). Turn the spindle clockwise in order to increase pressure. Turn the spindle counterclockwise in order to decrease pressure. One full revolution of spindle (16) equals 4400 kPa (638 psi).
- Tighten locking setscrew (14) .
- Remove the relief valve cartridge from the vise.
- Reinstall the relief valve cartridge into relief valve (9). Install the caps on the relief valves. Tighten to the torque specifications.

- Start the engine.
- Recheck the pressure at test port (10) .
- Stop the engine.
- Readjust the pressure override relief valve back to the original position. To readjust the pressure override relief valve, refer to Testing and Adjusting, "Relief Valve (Pressure Override)".
- Disconnect Tool (E) from the drum propel pump. Install Tool (E) to the X1 and X2 ports of the axle propel pump. Repeat the testing procedure and the adjusting procedure for the relief valves of the drum propel pump.
- When you finish the test for the axle propel pump, remove Tool (E) .
