Remove Planetary Spider Assembly
NOTE: If removal of wheel bearing nut is not planned (for any other service to planetary wheel ends), it is not necessary to remove wheel from the axle hub to service the planetary gearing.
Start By:
a. remove wheel
1. Stop the machine in a position or rotate the planetary spider assembly (1) so that the oil drain plug (5) is at the bottom.
2. Remove the drain plug and drain the lubricant.
3. Put marks (3) on both spider assembly (1) and wheel hub assembly (2) to insure correct alignment when reinstalling the unit.
NOTE: Some planetary wheel ends use spider assembly nuts (4) and lockwashers on wheel hub studs rather than bolts.
4. Remove the spider assembly bolts (4) and lockwashers.
NOTE: The adhesive effect of the liquid gasket material may require the use of the pry bar slots (6) to assist in loosening the spider assembly.
5. Separate the planetary spider assembly from the hub just enough to fasten a lifting device to the spider assembly.

The planetary axle uses a floating ring gear (not locked in place). Care should be taken to prevent this gear from accidentally falling out of the hub assembly if it remains inside, or from falling off the spider assembly if it stays with the planetary spider after the spider is removed. Personal injury or damage to the gear could result. |

6. Carefully remove spider assembly (1) from the wheel hub assembly (2).
a. If floating ring gear remains with the spider assembly during removal, firmly hold the ring gear to the spider assembly until complete unit can be placed on a bench and the ring gear removed.
b. If the floating ring gear remains in the hub when spider assembly is removed, remove the gear individually after the spider assembly has been placed on a bench.
Install Planetary Spider Assembly
1. Removal of all gasket material, including any silicone RTV, is accomplished by peeling or scraping the old gasket off both mating surfaces.
NOTE: Where silicone RTV gasket material is used, Dow Silastic No. RTV-732 Black and General Electric No. RTV-1473 Black meet the sealing requirements.
2. Apply silicone RTV gasket material to spider flange at hub mounting face. Use silicone RTV gasket application procedures as follows:
a. Remove dirt, grease or moisture from both mating surfaces.
b. Dry both of the surfaces.

Minor concentrations of acetic acid vapor may be produced during application of silicone RTV. Adequate ventilation should be provided when silicone RTV is applied in confined areas. Eye contact with these silicone RTV gasket materials may cause irritation. If contact with eyes takes place, flush eyes with water for 15 minutes and have eyes examined by a doctor. |

c. Apply silicone RTV in a continuous thin bead, 2 to 3 mm (.09 to .12 in) diameter, completely around flange surface and around the inner edge of all fastener holes. Use the typical application pattern (1) shown to assure complete sealing.
d. Assemble the components immediately to permit silicone RTV gasket material to spread evenly.
NOTE: Failure to use appropriate gasket material will cause axle to leak.
3. Start the spider and pinion assembly (2) into the wheel hub, aligning teeth of planet gears with the teeth of sun gear and ring gear.
4. Align the match marks on the spider flange and the wheel hub as previously marked at disassembly.
5. Align hub holes with spider holes and push spider assembly against hub.
6. Install spider lockwashers and bolts (3), and tighten evenly to specified torque.
7. Rotate the wheel end to position the fill/level plug (4) at the horizontal centerline of the axle. If vehicle is on blocks, lower the vehicle until wheel is on the ground or until axle is level again.
8. Remove the fill/level plug from the flange of the planetary spider assembly.
Reference: For correct type of lubricant and capacities, see the RR-250 Operation and Maintenance Guide, Form No. KEBU0637, or the SS-250 Operation and Maintenance Guide, Form No. KEBU0636.
9. Fill the wheel end with the correct lubricant until it is level with the fill hole. Wait for lube to distribute evenly throughout planetary. Check lube level and add more lube if necessary.
10. Make sure magnetic fill/level plug has been cleaned of any metal particles. Replace plug and tighten securely.

a. install wheel
Disassemble Planetary Spider Assembly
Start By:
a. remove planetary spider assembly
1. Remove the setscrews holding the planet pins in the spider. Setscrews are located at the small diameter ends of the planet pins.
2. Support spider assembly in a press, flange side down, and block up as required. To avoid damaging the pins, place a block of wood under the press to cushion the fall of the pins as they are pressed out.
NOTE: If a press is not available, use a brass drift and mallet to tap out the pins.
![]() |
Do not strike the planet pins directly with a steel hammer or personal injury from chips or splinters may result. |
![]() |
3. Press the planet pins (3) out through the spider (1) and planet gears (2).
4. Remove the planet gears (2) and their respective thrust washers (4).
NOTE: Thrust washers are designed for opposite sides of planet gears and can only be installed in their correct locations.
5. Clean all parts in a suitable solvent.
6. Remove any nicks, mars or burrs from machined or ground surfaces.
Assemble Planetary Spider Assembly
NOTICE |
---|
Debris from wear or failure must be thoroughly flushed from the wheel end to obtain satisfactory component life and performance of the new parts. |
1. Carefully inspect bores of planet gears. Do not use old planet gears if the bore surface has roughness from previous use. A smooth bore surface is essential for proper function.
NOTE: If planet pins do not have grooves for the O-rings, disregard step 2.
2. Install the proper O-ring (1) in the planet pin groove (2), making sure that the O-ring is not twisted after installation.
NOTICE |
---|
Chamfers on the large bores of spider must be smooth. Use an emery cloth on sharp edges to avoid damaging O-ring and/or nylon coating of planet pin during installation. |
3. Place the spider in a press with the flange side up, and block up as required.
4. Install the inner thrust washer with the bores aligned and the washer tab engaged in the spider indentation.
5. Coat the bore of the planet gear with a film of the same gear lube used in the wheel end, and slide planet gear and outer thrust washer into the spider. With bores of all parts aligned, engage the outer thrust washer tab in spider indentation.
6. Install the planet pin into the spider and on through the planet gear and thrust washers by hand. The large end of the planet pin will stop at the spider bore due to an interference fit.
7. Align match mark (3) on the large diameter of planet pin with the match mark on the spider. These match marks provide proper alignment of the setscrew hole in small end of the pin and the tapped setscrew hole in the spider boss.
8. Apply a film of non-hardening sealant (Permatex 51 or equivalent) to O-ring (1) and around large diameter of planet pin.
9. If O-rings are not used, brush Loctite 271 sealant/adhesive on the circumference of large planet pin diameter (4) protruding from spider.
NOTE: If a press is not available, use a brass drift and mallet to tap the pin through the spider and planet gear (5).
![]() |
Do not strike the planet pins directly with a steel hammer or personal injury from chips or splinters may result. |
![]() |
10. Being careful to keep match marks aligned, press the planet pin into the spider until shoulder of pin bottoms against inner thrust washer (6).
11. Install setscrew (7) into the spider and planet pin, and tighten to a torque of 27 ± 7 Nm (20 ± 5 lb ft).
NOTE: New setscrews already have a locking agent on the threads. If the original setscrews are used, apply one or two drops of Loctite 277 to threads of spider before installation.
12. Repeat these procedures to assemble the second and third sets of planetary pins, gears and washers.
End By:
a. install planetary spider assembly
Remove And Install Planetary Ring And Sun Gears
Start By:
a. remove planetary spider assembly
1. If planetary ring gear (1) is still on ring gear hub assembly (5), remove the ring gear.
2. Remove the snap ring (2), that holds the sun gear (3), from end of axle shaft.
3. Remove the sun gear from the axle shaft.
4. Remove the sun gear thrust washer (4).
NOTE: The following steps are for installation of the planetary ring and sun gears.
5. Install sun gear thrust washer (4), sun gear (3) and axle shaft snap ring (2). Thrust washer tangs must engage slots in spindle or nut. Apply grease to washer for temporary retention, then push sun gear against the washer.
6. Install planetary ring gear (1) onto ring gear hub (floating ring gear design).
